What Do Sports Physicals Involve?
The point of your child’s sports physical is to confirm he or she can safely participate in the intended athletic activities. Sports physicals are often required, and even if they’re not, it’s a good idea for your child to have one before starting a new sport or competitive season.
Sports physicals have two main parts:
Medical History
By looking for patterns of illness in your family, your provider may be able to identify underlying health conditions in your child or other factors that could increase his or her risk of injury. To do so, the provider will ask about any serious illnesses among your close relatives. The provider will also ask about your child’s:
- Current and previous illnesses, such as asthma and diabetes
- Hospitalizations and surgeries
- Allergies
- Past injuries, such as sprains, fractures, and concussions
- Medication use, including over-the-counter drugs, nutritional supplements, and herbal remedies
- Immunization record
Physical Examination
The provider will then perform a physical exam to check your child’s:
- Height and weight
- Blood pressure, pulse rate, and body temperature
- Heart, lungs, eyes, ears, nose, and throat
- Vision and hearing
- Joints and muscles
- Posture
If your child’s health checks out okay, the provider will complete and sign the form at the end of the sports physical. Otherwise, he or she can recommend next steps, such as follow-up testing or treatment for a health issue, if appropriate.
At VitalMed Urgent Care, we will help ensure that your child is ready and able to take on a new activity. To learn more about our sports physicals, contact us today, or simply stop by one of our walk-in clinics in Laredo, TX.
