RSV Testing in Laredo, TX
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common and highly contagious upper respiratory infection that can cause cold-like symptoms. Prompt treatment is important to help prevent the infection from progressing into the lower respiratory tract and leading to a more serious condition, such as pneumonia or bronchiolitis.
The first step toward getting appropriate treatment for respiratory syncytial virus is receiving a definitive diagnosis. At VitalMed Urgent Care in Laredo, Texas, we perform RSV testing on-site using a relatively simple nasal swab test.
When Is RSV Testing Needed?
RSV can produce a variety of symptoms that range in intensity from mild to severe. Sometimes, without the help of a medical provider, it can be difficult to tell whether you have RSV or a run-of-the-mill cold. At VitalMed, we generally recommend RSV testing if you initially experience a low-grade fever, mild cough, and runny nose followed by:
- A fever of 102°F or higher
- A hoarse, “barking” cough
- Wheezing or difficulty breathing
- Extreme fatigue
How Is RSV Treated?
There is no specific treatment protocol for RSV, which does not respond to antibiotics because it is not a bacterial infection. To help alleviate your symptoms and prevent the infection from worsening and spreading, your provider at VitalMed may suggest that you:
- Rest at home and get sufficient sleep
- Stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water and other clear liquids
- Take an over-the-counter fever reducer or nasal decongestant as directed
